Frieder and Gilda are from february till june 2022 in Dortmund at the Akademie Theater and Digitalität. We are really happy to create with the amazing Mark Mushiva new nerdy techy things! Stay tuned.
Our research wants to work on the interaction of robotic and human bodies in theatrical spaces. Manufaktor is a puppet theater collective that has been working with robotic bodies for years.
As puppeteers we know the simultaneity of actively influencing the play of the puppet/object and in turn passively observing it. We are interested in this balancing of perspectives and we want to transfer this to the robotic future of theater.
// a projective space of robot and human creative interactions
Translating the puppeteer’s arm into data.
The goal is to enable an artistic symbiosis between humans and robots. Away from the dystopian narratives that cultivate the human/machine divide. Away from the “uncanny valley” of humanoid robots towards a self-empowerment of robotic bodies.
We are interested in the emotive power enabled by new interactive technologies like computer vision and generative synthesis and how the allow us to feel an emotional effect as we explore spaces where they are implemented and what that will mean for the future of technology and public space
The installation “A projective space” builds on our performance ‘1/0/1 robots – hacking the binary code’. We want to develop our setup further. The stage set with the LED strips attached to it, which serves as a space for the 6 self-balancing robots with LED matrix, as well as, 2 live cameras and projector. The goal is a experimental, playful and exploratory ways in which people might try to appropriate the installation, the emergent complexity between control and speculation and ultimately the balance that is negotiated between human agency and the ungovernable natural world of which machines are now a part of.

Snowflakes. 1 Degree. It was a very weird feeling to pack my bag and go to the rehearsal today.
The Corona lockdown is still going on in Berlin and I barely move outside of my flat, my street and my neighborhood. This morning, we finally started our rehearsals for our project „1/0/1 robots“. After we started this process 2 years ago and we had to reschedule the whole project from September 2020 to February 2021.
It´s bitter-sweet because all of us want to rehearse, make theatre, meet, think together, let our thoughts travel together. But of course the anxiety is real.
What’s also part of the situation is that we can not reschedule again. The cultural office of Berlin that is part of our funding needs to finish their annual budget plan of 2020. So either we produce something now or we lose 40 % of our fees which would impact the whole team too. So having this in mind, I drove my bike to the rehearsal space, happy and blessed on the one side, on the other side afraid and questioning at the same time.
„1/0/1 robots“ started with thoughts about gender and robots. Is it now only about that?
It is still the beginning of 2020, the anniversary year of the invention of the word robot. We are very much in the middle of preparations. We had a one week gathering to talk about the concept for the new show 1/0/1 robots that will premiere in September. Besides the stage design, props and all the things that are related to the stage and the actual show, we discussed a lot about HOW WE WANT TO WORK.
We question the classical roles in theatre so that we decided to direct the show collectively. 4 people are the heart of the process of 1/0/1. What does this mean? What does collective working mean in this case? Our whole team consists of 12 people. How do we take decisions, how do we involve everybody and cherish each other‘s ideas and processes? At the same time, how can we give guidance, support and be sensitive within our working environment?
We really feel the need of time to open up this reflection in a production process. We need to educate ourselves about tools we can use for this.
It is a very intense and interesting time for us between reflection, content production, organizing, production meetings, learning, unlearning and valuing this process.
Communication is the key – as cheesy as it sounds.
